SITE HISTORY
The gently undulating land below the Kinglake escarpment was originally
part of Batman's purchase from the Yarra aborigines.
In 1853, Patrick Nelson and his wife Mary bought 534 acres
of land bounded by Plenty Road, Bridge Inn Road, Yan Yean Road and Nelson's Hill.
Their home was built on the east side of Plenty River and it is said that Ned Kelly
camped near the homestead while running from the law.
Two hundred acres of the original property were bequeathed
to Patrick and Mary's son, Patrick Jnr, who built a new homestead closer to Yan Yean Road.
Patrick Jnr's great-grandson, Patrick Laurence Mitchell, who was awarded an M.B.E. for his
services to the community, continued to run the property as a Poll Hereford cattle stud
until his passing in 1983.
The "Mitchells Run" estate aims to continue the proud pioneering tradition on this land
through thoughtful urban design and housing guidelines. The estate features spacious home
sites, views of the Kinglake Ranges and extensive parkland areas which preserve significant
remnant vegetation including the ancient River Red Gums.
